the Legend of Sleepy Hollow

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a great example of romanticism. Romanticism makes you use your mind just like rationalism does, but it also makes you use your imagination to which is in a way a step ahead. Not just relying on your scientific thoughts to entertain you. This made this type of thinking very popular because people in some ways grew board of the old ways.

While reading The Legend of Sleepy Hollow I was forced to use my imagination of a "headless horseman" ridding through the night, an ancient "Indian medicine doctor holding powwows with spirits", and a place that puts you in something like a dream world state of mind as soon as you "inhale the air" . These are things that you don't see on an everyday basis and so you have to imagine these things. It kept me on the edge of my seat trying to see what happened next and held my attention for quite a while. When it comes to romanticism this story is every bit of it. How many times do you see a headless horseman ridding anywhere? You don't its something that you have to use your imagination to to expierence and thats what romantocism is.

Franklin as a Rationalist

Ben Franklin’s life was almost based on rationalist beliefs. There are many reasons that I find this to be true but I am only going to list a few with supporting details. As you start to read the biography you will see a section that he states about “moral perfection”. This in included a list of thirteen virtues that he thought would help him become a better person. Things that he listed were temperance, silence, order, resolution, frugality, industry, sincerity, justice, moderation, cleanliness, and chastity, and humility. These things Franklin thought would make him a better person, and are big signs of rationalistic thinking. As opposed to the puritans belief that humans were created a certain way and that they would die that way.

Franklin also believed that his inventions would help man kind become a more perfect species. For example the invention of the bi-focal glasses, these specially designed glasses helped people see things three different ways. Franklin did not agree with the puritan’s belief that if your eyes were bad then that’s what God wanted. He believed that god gave man the intelligence to fix thing that were wrong. Another invention or theory that he had came by the way of electricity. While flying a kite in the middle of a thunder storm his kite was struck by lightning. Franklin found a way to make it possible that man could use this energy for themselves even though the puritans believed that things that came from nature were of God and man had no reason to even try and figure out the smallest detail of it. The last and final part that I think is the most important the ability for a government to run itself. He and his fellow rationalist help to form the country that we live in today known as The United States of America, and become one of the strongest in the world. . Even though they were living in a time were people said that God appoints who he wants to run countries and we should be submissive to that he still kept his own beliefs and made them a reality.

Writing Two

Marquez Foster
Today we are talking about an extraordinary basketball player who skipped college and went straight to the pros. That’s right I’m talking about LeBron James. While there have been other greats to make the jump from high school to the NBA like Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, and Amare Stoudemire he stands alone in several categories.

LeBron was the nations top basketball recruit coming out of high school, although he had hundreds of colleges throwing themselves at his feet, he chose to make millions at an early age. James was a three year high school All-American and player of the year so who wouldn’t want him. At 6 tall feet and weighing over 200 pounds he, was not the average size of an18 year old and many NBA teams noticed that. As a matter of fact the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers was so obsessed with getting him on his team that he took a $150,000 fine by the NBA and was suspended for two games for allowing LeBron to come and work out with the team.

After this he was still a high school student LeBron led his team to another state championship in his senior season and was named Cleveland’s Mr.Basketball. Next on his list of achievements was the McDonalds All-American game. This was another time for LeBron to showcase his skills to the world. First he captured the slam dunk contest crown then he led his team in points and a victory. This made him a nationwide house- hold name. People who had never even heard of him knew his name. This made teams more willing to do almost anything to get him. Some even suggested that Cleveland traded Andre Miller knowing this would make their roster weak just to get a chance at having the number one overall pick. If they did, then it worked and LeBron was the first pick in the 2004 NBA draft.

People were excited to see what this beast of a kid was able to do in the NBA. Not only was he the youngest player to start a NBA game, he was also being paid mega millions of dollars. Although he was only allowed to make so much because of the leagues rookie salary rule, he was still making $100 million in endorsements from Nike, Coca-Cola, and Upper Deck. Some thought that this type of money would give a teenager the so called “BIG HEAD” but not LeBron, while in training camp LeBron showed off his athletic ability averaging 21 points a game, six assists, and five boards a game. Talk about making a statement to the ones who doubted his ability. In the regular season he found his rhythm and in November he had 11 straight games with double digit points, and finished the month with a 33-point, 16-rebound effort against the Memphis Grizzlies
When the 2004 season started to drawn to an end most expected him to sort of die down like most rookies. But not this guy he kept on going. In March LeBron had his first “BREAK OUT GAME” against the New Jersey Nets. Scoring 41 points and dishing out 13 assists LeBron had arrived in the NBA. Throughout the month of April he recorded two more double-doubles and silicified himself as one of the NBA’s future icons. When you think about performances like this it’s obvious who won the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award. That’s right LeBron did beating out Carmelo Anthony and Dewayne Wade, and was also invited to play on the Olympic team making him the youngest player on the team.

The next season for him was no problem. He had no problem improving on his skills in all areas. Nobody in the league played more minutes than him, and he ranked third in the league in scoring. He averaged 27.2 points a game, 2.2 steals a game, and was sixth in passing with 7.2 assists a game. That year he was named to the East All-Star team and led the team in scoring and took home the MVP. That same year he led the Cavs all the way to the NBA finals where they lost to the San Antonio Spurs 3-1. A horrible ending to such a great season but look out for him to take the crown home to Cleveland sometime in the near future, because he is one of the most athletic players this league has ever seen disregarding Michael Jordan.

Declaration of Indepeendence

1) The rationalist thought that all men were created equal. It is “self-evident, that all men are created equal."
2) They believed that they had unalienable rights. "Endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights."
3) They believed that if government tried to violate these rights the citizens could overthrow the government. "Whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it."

These are rationalist thoughts because, the puritans believed that not everybody was born with rights and we should leave that alone, they thought that God chose who he waned to be head of the government and anybody who went against it was going against his will, and they did not think that everybody had rights and we didn’t' have the right to interfere with that.

Rationalist vs Puritans

The rationalist and the puritans had many diffrent belifs on things. The puritans didn't believe that all people were born with natural rights. Only a few people were chosen to have certain rights and some had more than others. They also didnt agree with the fact that rationalist thought that God created the universe and created humans to figure it out.

The rationalist thought that everything shopuld be discovered through science and not bible scriptures all the time. Sir Issac Newton used his ideas to develop the rules of energy and gravity. They used mathmatics, biology, and botany to develop their answers. Unlike the puritans the rationalist believed that everybody were born with natural rights that God had provided them with.
